General Information

American Airlines offers flexibility for Minor and Major name corrections for wholly unused (001) validated tickets.

Minor name corrections apply to itineraries that consist of American prime and American Eagle flights only and may be corrected in the same PNR. Itineraries ticketed in “R” inventory must follow Major Name Correction Guidelines.

Major name corrections apply to itineraries ticketed in “R” inventory, AA*/codeshare flight segments and Other Airline prime flight segments and require a new PNR/Order as a name correction cannot be made within the same PNR/Order due to restrictions put in place with American’s and other operating carrier’s operating systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.    How should the passenger’s name appear in the Passenger Name Field of the reservation and on the ticket?

The customer's name that appears in the Name Field of the PNR, ticket and boarding pass, only requires the Last Name and First Name as it appears on the government ID that the passenger will use while traveling.

If the customer has TSA Pre
®, Global Entry, NEXIUS, or SENTRI card, the name submitted on their airline reservation must be an exact match to the name they provided on their application. If they use a frequent flyer account or online travel profile, ensure that the name is properly saved.

2.    What if the customer’s identification contains a middle name?

The middle name would then be included in the Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD/DOCS) of the PNR. No need to reissue the ticket.

3.    What is the difference between a Name Correction and a Name Change?
name correction allows the agency to correct the name to match the TSA government required document(s) for misspelling, married/maiden/divorce names, legal names, secondary last name, inverted names, etc., and the SFPD DOB/Gender does not change from the original input for ticketing.

name change means changing the ticket from one person to another person, and it is not allowed.

4.    Why is “R” inventory on AA Prime flights required to follow Major Name Correction guidelines?

“R” inventory does not allow Name Corrections in some markets. When a Name Correction is performed, SABRE programming may cancel the entire reservation, therefore a new PNR must be created.

5.    How do we change the gender from M/F to U for Undisclosed?

Contact Agency Support Desk for assistance.

6.    What if the passenger's name is correct, but I only need to update the SFPD (DOB or gender)?

In some cases, you may be able to simply correct the SSR DOCS. However, this depends on the time remaining before the flight's departure. For further details, please refer to the Secure Flight FAQ

7.    The original ticketed cabin is no longer available to create a new PNR for a major name correction, Can I book the flight(s) in a lower or higher cabin?

Upgrade or downgrade is not permitted. You can update the SFPD (at least 72hrs before departure) to match customer’s ID. Suggest the customer to allow extra time to check-in for the flight and bring various forms of identification to the airport to support who they are.

8.    I have AA and Other airline separate tickets in the same PNR. Can I correct the name in the original PNR?

You will need to correct the name in a new PNR containing the AA flights only (same flights, inventory, and routing as ticketed) and then follow the Minor Name correction guidelines.

You can also remove the OA segments from the original PNR and correct the name in the original PNR for the remaining AA flights. You will need to contact the other airline for their Name Correction guidelines.
