Ticket Validity
All refundable and non-refundable tickets will be valid as follows:
· Wholly unused tickets - Travel must commence within one year from the original ticket issue date. The return can be on a later date.
Example: ticket issued February 1, 2024; travel must commence no later than 11:59 PM on February 1, 2025
· Partially used tickets - Unless otherwise specified in the fare rule, travel must be completed within one year from the outbound travel date
Example: The outbound (first segment) was flown on July 7, 2024 – the return (last flight segment) should be scheduled to depart no later than 11:59 PM on July 7, 2025.
Note: The one-year expiration is calculated based on the initial issued ticket; any subsequent exchanges do not extend the ticket validity.
· Tickets exchanged to intentionally extend ticket validity will receive a debit memo.
· Once a ticket has expired, the fare and their associated taxes become non-refundable.
Voluntary Changes
The tickets must be reissued when the itinerary is rebooked. If applicable, any fare difference and/or change fee must be collected.
Non-Refundable Tickets
Refund of non-refundable tickets qualifying for a refund due to any exception policy (Schedule Change, schedule irregularity, bereavement, etc.) must take place as follows:
· Wholly unused tickets: within one year of the original ticket issue date
Example: Qualifying tickets issued on February 1, 2024, may be refunded no later than February 1, 2025
· Partially used tickets: within one year from the outbound travel date
Example: If travel began on August 1, 2024, qualifying tickets may be refunded no later than August 1, 2025. (regardless of the ticket issued date)
Refundable Tickets
Customers who have purchased refundable fare tickets on American may receive a refund on:
Wholly unused tickets
· A full refund minus any applicable cancellation penalty fee.
· Refunds must be processed within one year of the ticket issue date.
Example: ticket issued February 1, 2024, must be refunded no later than February 1, 2025
· The one-year refund window begins on the purchase date of the original ticket. Any subsequent ticket changes do not extend this timeframe.
Partially used tickets
· The refund will be the value of the unused refundable coupons, subject to applicable fare rules and penalties.
· Refunds must be processed within one year from the outbound travel date.
Example: ticket issued February 1, 2024, where the outbound was flown October 1, 2024, may be refunded no later than October 1, 2025
· Once a ticket has expired, the fare and their associated taxes become non-refundable.
Note: The flight reservation should be canceled prior to the ticketed departure time to avoid forfeiting the ticket value.
