Effective January 19, 2022, 5G wireless service has been deployed nationwide. 5G is the fifth generation of technology designed to improve the speed and reliability of cellular networks that smartphones, tablets, and other devices use to transmit data, like streaming video. 5G operates in frequencies adjacent to the ones used by radio altimeters on aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has worked to ensure the safety of all aircraft and the traveling public as 5G rolls out, and has put some operational limitations in place for some fleet types and at some airports under certain conditions. Importantly, AT&T and Verizon have delayed deployment of select 5G antennas around certain airports to help mitigate significant operational impact on all airlines flying to and from U.S. airports.
However, some customers may experience delays cancellations, and seat capacity restriction in inclement weather and other conditions as we follow FAA safety directives to prevent the risk of interference.
For customers affected by a service disruption, refer to the following guidelines:
- Service disruption occurs within 72 hours of departure, refer to Schedule Irregularity/IROPS
- Service disruptions which occur more than 72 hours prior to departure, refer to Schedule Change guidelines
We appreciate your understanding as the airline industry navigates through this new technology.
